Lee-Jackson Day Dinner
Lovers not just of history but of fine food, warm firesides, and old fashioned hospitality are invited to indulge those tastes together with friends old and new at the ninth annual Lee-Jackson Day Dinner. Set for Sunday, January 22, 2012, at Historic Michie Tavern, this event will continue the Virginia tradition reintroduced to Charlottesville and Albemarle County in 2004.
Long celebrated in the Commonwealth as a state holiday, Lee-Jackson Day marks two birthdays, those of Robert Edward Lee, born January 19, 1807, and Thomas Jonathon “Stonewall” Jackson, born January 21, 1824. Though its celebration has weathered challenge in recent decades, the day’s hold on many hearts has remained secure. And with the Sesquicentennial of the War having commenced in 2011, this event offers the perfect opportunity to commemorate in the best of company.
Because music always makes a festive occasion more so, the 2012 Dinner will feature Hard Tack and Sow Belly, a Fredericksburg-based string band that plays period music in period dress. This group has performed at the Museum of Confederacy and at an array of WBTS and Appalachian events elsewhere. Under an alternative handle, Moch Pryderi, the same talented group performs Welsh music complete with harp and bagpipe. Given that Jefferson Davis had roots in Wales, as did many Virginians including Thomas Jefferson, the program will also offer Welsh selections.
The Lee-Jackson Dinner is open to all. A single advance payment, $43.00 per person or $86 per couple, will cover both entertainment and a buffet featuring Michie Tavern’s justly famed homestyle Southern fare. That’s country ham, fried chicken, black-eyed peas, biscuits, and cornbread, plus desserts and non alcoholic beverages. Beer and wine will be available at extra charge. The evening will begin with a social hour at 6:00 pm. Dinner will follow at 7:00, and the musicians will take the floor afterward.
Reservations are required and must be made no later than January 17, 2012. Checks should be made out to Lee-Jackson Dinner and mailed to Lee Scouten, P.O. Box 202, Charlottesville VA 22902-0202.
